MG and Jaguar models delighted California enthusiasts and made their manufacturers’ fortunes. As a forward-thinking industrialist, Sir Black, the head of the Standard Triumph Group, seized the opportunity: he launched a project for a robust, economical, simple, and high-performance sports car. Thus began the Triumph Roadster (TR) lineage, which would go on to enjoy enormous success. The TR3A, produced from 1957 to 1961, is one of the most iconic models. It features a long hood, graceful curves, and charming little doors that invite the driver to literally jump right in. This is your chance to discover a simple, meticulously crafted interior, where the numerous gauges and chrome accents set the tone. Behind the wheel, the TR3 is a pure thrill. It’s an authentic British sports car from the 1950s—the perfect way to experience the open road! Offering an unbeatable price-to-performance ratio at the time, the TR3A enjoyed great success, with nearly 58,000 units produced and 95% of its production exported to the U.S. Côte Basque ENCHERES is pleased to offer this 1960 Triumph TR3A, which features an “Old English White” exterior with a matching hardtop, a beige soft top, and a blue faux-leather interior. While the majority of Triumph TR3As crossed the Atlantic, the one we’re offering has a known local history: the original vehicle registration certificate—a copy of which is available—bears the notation “new vehicle” and features the Basque license plate “149 ER 64,” which the car has displayed for over 60 years! This car spent 37 years at the Château d’Arcangues! Purchased new in 1960 by Mrs. Marie-Thérèse d’Arcangues, sister of Guy, Marquis d’Arcangues, it still bears on the rear trunk the emblem of the Parisian garage that distributed the TRIUMPH brand at the time. The car was originally delivered with the hardtop configuration, without a roll bar or convertible top; these features have since been added to the vehicle. In December 1997, Marie-Thérèse d’Arcangues purchased a more comfortable XJ sedan from JAGUAR FERRARI BAYONNE, which offered to take the Triumph in trade. The TR3 was subsequently put up for sale and then purchased secondhand by our current collector (with 91,142 km on the odometer in 1999). Since then, the vehicle has been regularly used and maintained, as evidenced by the invoice records (engine restoration in 2003 at 97,180 km, suspension, brakes). The mechanical components function satisfactorily, both at startup and during a test drive. Under the hood, the engine and drivetrain are original and in fairly good condition; however, it should be noted that the radiator will require attention in the future. The chassis is sound and shows no significant visible signs of impact or perforating corrosion. The body, which was restored some time ago in its original “Old English White” paint, now shows some signs of age. Localized perforating corrosion is beginning to appear (driver’s side rocker panel, front fenders) and should be addressed to restore this beautiful British car to its former glory. The interior reflects the care taken by the previous owner; the blue upholstery with white piping is in fairly good condition, as is the soft top. The rare original hardtop is included; its Plexiglas window has come loose from the assembly and will need to be reinstalled with new seals to function properly. In generally decent overall condition despite some restoration needs, this TRIUMPH has a history
