Provenance: former collection of Pierre Landrieu, former president of the Festival Committee.
Although a strong tradition of popular festivals has existed in Bayonne since the late 19th century, featuring a wide variety of events (dances, float parades, elegance contests, horse races, cavalcades, and bull runs), the dynamic Festival Committee, established in the 1920s, secured the creation of the Bayonne Festival in 1932. It wasn’t until the postwar period that these now-traditional festivals became firmly established, first as the counterpart to the Pamplona Festival and then as the largest popular event in France.
