Remigio MENDIBURU (1931–1990) - Lot 35
Remigio MENDIBURU (1931–1990) Untitled, 1982 Wood and concrete, monogrammed. H. 25 cm; W. 72 cm; D. 52 cm Provenance: Artist’s collection, by inheritance. Exhibition: - Mendiburu - Materia y Memoria, Museum of Fine Arts, Bilbao, April 14–September 5, 2021. Bibliography: - J.-P. HUERCANOS (ed.), Mendiburu - Materia y Memoria, Bilbao, Museum of Fine Arts, 2021, reproduced on pp. 103 and 292. Ideologically close to Constantin Brâncuși, Mendiburu draws inspiration from The Wisdom of the Earth (1907) from both a formal and intellectual perspective. This formalism is evident in the absence of a pedestal in his work and in his use of “non-noble” materials such as concrete or stone. Furthermore, Mendiburu expresses his love for wood, trees, and the forest into which he immerses himself. This rare series of works combining concrete and wood are all representations of this Basque force, tamed by Man over time and a symbol of the rusticity so dear to the artist.
