Remigio MENDIBURU (1931–1990) - Lot 32
Remigio MENDIBURU (1931–1990) Ezpalak, 1974 Wood and rope. H. 59 cm; W. 100 cm; D. 21 cm Provenance: Artist’s collection, by inheritance. Exhibitions: - Remigio Mendiburu, Luzaro Gallery, Bilbao, November 4–23, 1975 (reproduced on p. 5) - Mendiburu - Materia y Memoria, Museum of Fine Arts, Bilbao, April 14–September 5, 2021. Bibliography: - J.-P. HUERCANOS (ed.), Mendiburu - Materia y Memoria, Bilbao, Museum of Fine Arts, 2021, reproduced on pp. 47 and 264. Through the creation of the Ezpalak series, Mendiburu explores the concept of scale in sculpture. According to him, size is secondary to the sculpture’s occupation of space and time. Through the interplay of reflections and twists he incorporates into these mobile sculptures—which appear static—the size varies and evolves within a space defined by the passage of time. The archival photographs, which all depict these sculptures photographed outdoors, aim to reveal a variation of images that appear depending on the Earth’s rotation relative to the sun. The result is a multitude of different views, yet all seemingly similar.
