This work is part of a series of two sculptures related to Basque cosmogony; it is most often compared to "Ilargiamandreak Mamuak" (Masks of Grandmother Moon), a set of seven works symbolizing the various aspects of the Moon and created in 1977. The Gudari (Soldier) obviously plays a pivotal role in Basque cosmogony and contemporary history, thus evoking a certain parallel with the Basque resistance against the Franco dictatorship. The Moon, a central element of Basque heritage and culture, is here under the protection of these Basque soldiers, who ensure it continues to shine.
