17th-century Flemish school after Tiziano Veccellio, known a - Lot 63
17th-century Flemish school after Tiziano Veccellio, known as the TITIAN (1488-1576) Ecce Homo Copper. 23 x 17.5 cm (Minor scratches) Related work : - Musée du pays Vaurais, Lavaur, inv. n° 97.1.1 - Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint-Louis, USA, inv. n°10:1936 The recent exhibition at the Musée Condé in Chantilly led to the rediscovery of a work by the Italian Master. Our version is an example of the tradition of disseminating Renaissance paintings throughout Europe. This copy, executed on copper, shows Pontius Pilate as a healthy man with squared-off eyes, which can be symbolized as ignorance of the consequences of his act, represented by this open hand richly adorned with jewels. Christ's complexion is typical of Flemish painting. This contrasts with the rich red fabric and gold embellishment of Christ's sheath. More than a copy, this work is a discreet testimony to the influence of the Italian Masters on 17th-century European painting.
