*Pablo TILLAC (1880-1969) - Lot 934
*Pablo TILLAC (1880-1969) Illustration for Soir de Bataille. Gouache, signed upper right 27.5 x 33 cm "Then appeared, bristling with arrows, Red with the ruddy flow of his fresh wounds, Under floating purple and gleaming brass, To the roar of the whelks that sounded their fanfare, Superb, mastering his frightened horse, Over the blazing sky, the bloody Imperator." Provenance: Collection of Pierre Minvielle, author of Pablo Tillac, le portraitiste des Basques, ed. Atlantica, Biarritz, 2013. Described on pp. 84-86. Illustrations for Les Trophées by José-Maria de Hérédia. Les Trophées is a collection of Parnassian poems by José-Maria de Heredia, published in 1893 by Lemerre and comprising almost all of his poetic work. Comprising 118 sonnets and 4 poems, it is the last peak of the Parnassian movement. Pablo Tillac appreciated the epic spirit of José Maria de Hérédia's work. He illustrated several of the writer's poems and writings (La Nonne Alferez), either for his own pleasure or with a view to publishing them. This set of gouache-on-paper compositions features lines from the poems Soir de Bataille, Après Cannes, Antoine et Cléopâtre and La Trebbia.
