*Pablo TILLAC (1880-1969) Jacob Meyer in his shop. India ink and gouache, signed lower left 16 x 21 cm Francis Jammes introduces the character of Jacob Meyer in his introduction to the novel: "Some thirty years ago, there lived in Bayonne one of those Jews who wear horn bezicles on a hooked nose; whose wrinkled forehead and cheeks reproduce quite exactly a page riddled with Talmudic characters, and whose hands, like spiders, sometimes weave the gray web of their beard, sometimes survey the oscillating scales of the gold weigher or jeweler". Provenance: Collection of Pierre Minvielle, author of Pablo Tillac, le portraitiste des Basques, ed. Atlantica, Biarritz, 2013.
