Alice HALICKA-MARCOUSSIS (1895-1975) - Lot 2
Alice HALICKA-MARCOUSSIS (1895-1975) Courtyard of a building, circa 1921-1925 Oil on canvas signed lower right. 65 x 54 cm Born into a family of Polish Jewish academics and doctors in Krakow, Alice Halicka studied Fine Arts there. During her many trips, she met the European avant-garde. She adheres to Cubism. In 1913, she married Louis Marcoussis. She met Guillaume Apollinaire, and also Raoul Duffy who opened the doors of the Lyon silk industry to her. From 1921, she resumed a postimpressionist style and painted scenes of daily life in Kazimierz, a Jewish district of Krakow. Our work is certainly part of this period. In the 1930s, she travelled to the United States and worked for ballets. She took refuge in central France with Louis Marcoussis during the war and devoted the last years of her life to literature and travel.
